Description of the project |
“The Orti Urbani are special, unique places with a rare and valuable natural, cultural and social heritage, difficult to find in other spaces in the city. Open spaces are transformed into large research laboratories with paths to follow and places to discover full of surprises: ‘gyms’ for educational activities that allow unique experiences in contact with nature, history and traditions.
(…) Doing projects of a social nature, promoting eco-sustainable practices, socio-professional reintegration, valuable places for the care and support of various forms of social distress, redevelopment of urban contexts against land consumption in opposition to building speculation projects. But also, last but not least, the promotion of practices capable of reinventing citizen participation processes, a drive to collectively take care of the Common Good. This, in short, is the experience that we as the Orti Urbani Tre Fontane Association have put into practice in recent years.” (source : website) |

Hortus Urbis |

Description of the project |
Hortus Urbis is an experimental project on public space and biodiversity managed by the association Zappata Romana, born in 2012 in Rome in an unused green area in the frame of the Appia Antica Park. It was destined to be a shared space and a didactic vegetable garden with plants used in ancient Rome selected among those discovered in the excavations of Pompeii or mentioned by Columella, Pliny the Elder, Cato, Virgil.
The Appia Antica Park is one of the most significant protected areas of the city because of its location in the middle of the urban center and because of the extraordinary historical and environmental potential that it can transmit, especially to the younger generations.
The aims of the project concern both natural and cultural aspects. The objective is to increase the sensibilisation of children, youth and adults for the respect of nature through understanding and knowledge. This is a project of education to respect and protect the historical and artistic heritage and the environment in general.
At the Hortus Urbis are held every Sunday workshops for children that have as their central focus on nature, food and culture. There are educational modules in collaboration with associations and groups active in the area concerning gardening, cooking, painting. During the week are hosted schools in the area. There are also courses for adults in gardening, knowledge of wild plants, recovery of ancient skills such as basketry, pruning roses, cooking, watercolors.
The Hortus Urbis is maintained through the voluntary activities of citizens and with the support of local associations, without public contributions.
This collaborative community has created a form of management of the shared resource that is environmentally, economically, socially and culturally sustainable to ensure its use by the whole community. |

Description of the project |
In 2010 the park was completely abandoned, from policing to pruning. Between 2010 and 2012 there were volunteer activities once a week to clean the park. They reported the situation but nothing was done.
Open dump, there have been several campaigns to sponsor and spread the word about the problem that have led to nothing. Especially bringing together the already active voluntary associations and pull in the others. Istituto dell’affidamento dell’area verde “Offence-omission of a public service” calls for tenders to take funds for park cleaning and equipment acquisition.
For keeping clean and active the archeological garden, they define high costs 15,000 euro, expectations of a new part-time job and twenty people who could work a day job: a sort of public call was made with a ranking list giving priority to unemployed older people, unemployed young people not students, immigrant women. Among 45 submitted, 20 places were reserved.
The park get transformed and clean from July 2015 until June 2016. It built economic support, support for the park, and cultural activities (outdoor cinema, group walks). The volume of glass produced by the park weekly was in industrial quantities. There has been a change in custom, bottles are no longer thrown on the ground but in the bin. New funds are also being sought with a call within a community found process. It is a platform for association, and provides services for citizens in need. |

Description of the project |
“The Committee for the Caffarella Park, which has as its symbol the stylised farmhouse of Vaccareccia, was founded in 1984 by some young people of the time with the aim of eliminating degradation, expropriating the area, creating a public park within the larger complex of the Appia Antica Park and disseminating the great historical-artistic-naturalistic heritage of the IX Municipality. To this end, the Committee for the Caffarella Park has collaborated with the Municipality of Rome for the drafting of the Caffarella Use Plan, for the first expropriation of 70 hectares of the valley (1999) and for the second expropriation of a further 40 hectares plus the farmhouses (2005). The Committee also cooperates with the Province of Rome and the Lazio Region, and with the Appia Antica Park Authority. Through conferences and the publication of several texts on the historical-artistic-naturalistic heritage of the Caffarella and the villas and monuments of the IX Municipality, the Committee has made its contribution to the dissemination of the remarkable cultural heritage of this area of our city.” (source : website) |
