“Urban soil 4 food project starts from the challenge of using cities‘ waste (biological and mineral) to produce a useful product (soil), which could be later used for meeting different cities‘ needs, such as food production, parks and construction. As main innovative output of the project, project partners will develop a safe and certified soil with by-production of energy (through using technology of fermentation and pyrolysis).
The project will be articulated around four main interconnected aspects (‘circles’) backboned with two key investments: the establishment of a pilot system for urban soil production and the establishment of four urban gardens (using the urban soil produced).”(https://uia-initiative.eu/en/uia-cities/maribor)

| Description of the project |
The “Curing the Limbo” project capitalises on Athens’ vibrant civil society to help refugees and the local unemployed to overcome the stage of inertia.
The program develops around a circular “gift” system, addressing the twofold issue of both housing and inactivity: Refugees receive affordable living spaces from the city’s available housing stock and in return, they work for the public benefit, supporting the needs of the local community and participating in citizen-led activities that improve quality of life in Athenian neighborhoods.
Beneficiaries receive on-the-job training supervised by the University of Athens, which includes language learning, psycho-social support, “street law” knowledge and other basic social and soft skills. These skills are tailored to the beneficiaries’ needs and are offered in an integrated way, during which other parallel activities are also gradually introduced.
The modality of exchange is developed around the incentives given both to tax-paying proprietors of currently empty spaces as well as to the beneficiaries through their integrated inclusion in the city. |

“CoRE will address integration challenges by implementing innovative solutions. The project aims at providing refugees with integrated support to facilitate their integration in Vienna, by focussing on three aspects:
Firstly, CoRE is an empowerment fabric jointly planned, utilized and operated by public institutions, NGOs, civil society initiatives and refugees. By pooling resources and knowhow and by making refugees equal partners instead of passive beneficiaries, it helps to initiate smart transformation processes for the whole integration system.
Secondly, CoRE is a physical infrastructure in the form of a CoRE building, which will be adapted to the needs of the project. The CoRE building will be a location that offers community spaces as well as service spaces. Through new forms of cooperation of a broad range of stakeholders, CoRE will be the venue for a variety of integration activities to take place.

5Ponts tackles urban poverty in 5 main dimensions: jobs, housing, health, inclusion, and empowerment through involvement. It experiments an innovative way to tackle the interconnectedness of the major factors of urban poverty, and to break the circle of social and spatial polarization by:
– Promoting an innovative approach of support and conceiving the project from the ground: based on the users’ choice model and their empowerment through an active involvement to define the needed services.
– Creating an innovative social urban equipment: a building operating as a One-stop Shop interconnecting different social groups, providing work opportunities (through a neighborhood restaurant, a collective urban farm, a solidarity store), as well as solidarity-based housing, low threshold health care, and a high level of integration of tailored social services opened 24/24 and 7/7.
– Locating the social equipment at the heart of a new central multifunctional district, already including health clusters, social solidarity businesses, private and social housing.
– Opening the project to the people living/working in the area, through neighborhood dialogue and involvement of civil society.
A key element of the project is that before the delivery of the building, 5Bridges will implement small scale labs to test and optimize the different designed answers that will be integrated in this social urban equipment, first of this kind in Europe. |
