| Description |
Base Gaia was started by a group of four families that in June 2014 chose the land where to project and co-desing the co-housing initiative. From four families, Base Gaia was able to reach the number of 10 families that today represent the basis of the project.
Fundamental to their project is their autonomy. Base Gaia did not make use of any intermediaries and looked for the land, as well as designed the project by themselves.
On the 6th of February 2015 they founded the Base Gaia Società Cooperativa Edilizia in order to purchase the land and start building. The co-designed project has been approved by the City of Milan in December 2016.
The house will develop on 5 floors. Every family will have 100 sq m for their apartment and 200 sq m of shared spaces like an auditorium, a polyfunctional space (cinema-theatre), a game room, a library with a co-working space, a garden and a solarium terrace. |

Macao |

| Description |
The Macao group started to form in 2012, with the occupation of the Torre Galfa building in Milan. This occupation marks the beginning of a movement of occupation of abandoned buildings in Milan that carries a symbolic and political message. Since the beginning, Macao activists have struggled to propose a new vision for the organization of the city. The occupation is in itself symbolic because it underlines the will to refuse real estate speculations and real estate market logics, bringing citizens’ needs, arts, culture, and politics to the forefront. It is later in 2012 that Macao occupied the building where it established its headquarters until today. An ex market for the slaughterhouse, the building in Viale Molise has been restored and it is allowing Macao to improve the cultural and artistic offer of the City of Milan and to also show that another management and another purpose for abandoned buildings is possible. During the past 5 years of activity, Macao has hosted concerts, laboratories, literary festivals, theatre events, movie screenings and political gatherings. It has founded a magazine, hosted exhibitions, promoted workshops and seminars and cooperated with local organizations and universities.
Macao also works with a completely horizontal governance model, refusing to adopt any hierarchic structure and fostering participatory organizational principles. |

Community-led Management Over Local Water Supplies |
| Date |
2005 |
| Description of the project |
The National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme (NRWSSP) was elaborated and developed in 2005 to guide all government and donor interventions in water supply and sanitation (WSS) in rural areas (GRZ, 2005) and, since then the NRWSSP has been directing all interventions and interventions in WSS in rural areas of Zambia.
The core approach adopted was the Sustainable Operation and Maintenance Project (SOMAP) O&M mechanism and model which were developed and tested in two phases of the Rural Water Supply (SOMAP1 and SOMAP2) implemented by the Ministry of Local Government and Housing with the technical cooperation by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) (GRZ and JICA, 2013). Amongst the many objectives that guided the reform process in Zambia, two of these were of direct bearing on strengthening community-based management, namely: promoting community management and integration of hygiene education in rural WSS; development of human resource capacity by promoting training in all institutions and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education (WASHE) training in rural areas (NWASCO, 2004). D
In line with the goal of the National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme of providing sustainable access to water supply and sanitation in rural areas so as to contribute towards poverty alleviation of Zambia’s rural population (GRZ, 2007), interventions in WSS were supported in 15 district of Luapula, Muchinga and Northern provinces as well as Central Province. |
