| Description of the project | Tactical Urbanism started in 2009, incorporating its processes to the methodology of Street Plans, an architecture and urbanism firm founded by Tony Garcia and Mike Lydon, and now with offices in Miami, NYC, and San Francisco.
“Tactical Urbanism is an approach to neighborhood building that uses short-term, low cost and scalable interventions and policies to catalyze long term change.” (http://tacticalurbanismguide.com/- p.11) It is not necessarily something new but Street Plans named it by absorbing more traditional ways of collective city making, in a time when people were less involved in urban development, and thus empowering them to take ownership of public spaces. Projects can be as varied as plazas, parklets, pilot streets upgrades, traffic improvement interventions, etc. Today, TU is widespread around different parts of the world, with more people becoming aware of the idea of empowerment through collective city making processes. TU did not start with governmental support but through a group of citizens advocating for better urban conditions. |
