Description of the project |
The Pépinière is a non-profit aimed at giving more life to communities and making more participative cities. It uses public space to foster social relations as in former villages.
Its projects can be summarized in three main categories including the Vivace project, comprising a call for project and the deployment of the latter (in which the social distance between the project proactors and the neighbors was observed), and which was backed by the project managers and interns, the Laboratory sites which represent experimentation grounds and eventually the limited partnership with the municipality which is proactive towards federating communities.
All the projects are envisioned on the long-term and focus on giving tools for the community to get more autonomous. The projects are mainly implemented in Montreal, but also in Quebec where there are 2 projects, as well as in Toronto. Other small cities in rural areas have contacted la Pépinière less cosmopolitan. As an example, for the project “Rue de Dijon”, they fostered the creation of the “comité d’amis” through which they federated a nucleus of community around the project. |

Description of the project |
Espaces temps is a not-for-profit social economy enterprise founded in Montreal in 2009. It supports municipalities, universities, cultural venues and other organizations to carry out innovative and “human centered” projects and provides insight on design thinking. Most of the funding comes from this consulting activity, from which they generate a surplus that enable them to finance autonomous initiatives with social impact. The enterprise imagines and activates complex projects while mobilizing the partners at the right time and gathers the necessary expertise and skills (including including graphic design, art direction, illustration, communications, programming, information architecture, industrial design, architecture, town planning, spatial planning, publishing, journalism, animation of co-design workshops, real estate management , financing, market analysis) for their implementation. Besides acting as a consultant, Espaces Temps also sets up and develops its own projects. |

Description of the project |
‘Reclaimed water’ via proprietary technology to allow for social reclaiming as a space for human activity at large scale. Plus Pool, was first proposed in 2010, it’s a floating pool with the ‘World’s First’ filtration mechanism to remove bacteria and contaminants through the concentric layers of filtration materials that make up the walls of the pool itself – leaving 9,000 square feet of clean, safe and swimmable river water in the pool.
“Like a giant strainer dropped into the river, + POOL is designed to clean up to half a million gallons of water every single day. The layered filtration system incrementally removes bacteria and contaminants to ensure nothing but clean, swimmable water that meets both city and state standards. No chemicals, no additives, just natural river water.”
Location to be determined – will be in East River close to downtown Brooklyn. Final site selection is set to be announced later this year, and completion is set for 2019.+Pool (members
+Pool (members of Family New York and PlayLab), external partners helping with design (ARUP, IDEO, Columbia University etc.); little involvement from City though to scale it up; working to get permits etc. but ‘getting permission’ rather than partnerships.
Environmental reclamation: reclaiming dirty water and reclaiming underutilized space (similar to ‘opportunistic proximity) |
